Bluegrass Songbook by Pete Wernick

My Question is: I have purchased the Bluegrass Songbook; however, I am not sure how to use it. I understand that it is applicable for guitars as well as banjos. I play the banjo, and my specific question is: In a particular measure, do you just pick the notes shown in tab, or should you do a roll and incorporate these notes in the roll?
Thanks,

Walt,
The tab is just to convey the melody. It's sort of instead of music notation. My simplified system gives the notes and the essential timing of the singing.

A banjo player can of course pick the melody notes, but by themselves that's not what people think of as bluegrass style. If you're a bluegrass banjo player, the standard thing to do in Scruggs style is to keep 8-note rolls going that include a recognizable melody, which would of course be some but probably not all of the melody notes, along with the notes from other strings that happen in rolls.
